Learn to paint like the old masters – step by step

Do you want to learn to paint using the techniques and insights of the old masters?
Whether you are a beginner or already have experience: in my courses and workshops, you will learn to paint with attention to drawing, light, color, and composition, in a way that is both technically sound and creatively free.

You learn not only how to paint, but above all how to look. After this course, a museum visit will never be the same again.

Lesson content

We work from a clear and proven structure, inspired by the working methods of both old and newer masters. In three steps, you will learn to transform ideas into compelling paintings:

  1. Drawing – the foundation of every strong painting

  2. Light and dark – form, depth and atmosphere

  3. Color – harmony, contrast and expression

During the course, the following topics, among others, will be covered:

  • Looking like an artist: learning to analyze what makes a painting strong

  • Art History: Inspiring Stories and Lessons from the Great Masters

  • Knowledge of materials: paint, brushes, supports, and techniques

  • The 'designing' of a painting, also from imagination and fantasy

  • Realistic painting of landscapes, portraits, and still lifes

There is a fixed curriculum, but always room for in-depth study and personal guidance.

About the teacher

For me, teaching is more than transferring knowledge; it is looking, exploring, and growing together. My first experience teaching oil painting began in 2019, when I gave online lessons to friends and acquaintances during the COVID-19 pandemic. This quickly grew into structured courses.

In 2024 and 2025, I worked as an art teacher at SKVR, the Centre for the Arts in Rotterdam. As a self-taught oil painter, I have personally navigated every conceivable obstacle of painting. It is precisely because of this that I know what both beginners and advanced students struggle with, and how I can provide them with targeted guidance.

My approach is technically serious, but always visual, practical, and personal.
